Carnival in the Maltese islands kicked off today - this morning in Gozo, this evening in Valletta.
The Gozo Regional Carnival included a defilè through Republic Street, Victoria with competitive dancing performed in the enclosure in Independence Square. Carnival activities are this evening being held in the Xaghra Square.
Activities in Valletta today include dancing competitions in Freedom Square and a defile with the participation of the King Carnival Float, Carnival Band and sets of Grotesque Masks.
Contrary to the past, Freedom Square is not being closed off this year and passers-by will be able to watch the dance routines. Those who prefer to watch the show close-up can still book seats.
The traditional game of Kukkanja, which dates back to the time of the Knights, will also be held. This will see people climbing up a slippery maypole to try and grab the prizes tied at the very top.
Street parties are taking place in several squares in Valletta, as well as in a number of towns and villages including Ħamrun, Qormi, Marsascala, Paola, Dingli, St Julians and Għaxaq.
Tomorrow, the carnival activities will continue into the night.
