The reign of joy and merrymaking in Gozo commenced a week earlier than usual.

The programme, an initiative of the Gozo Cultural Council within the Ministry for Gozo, is spread over 12 days. The grand opening took place last Friday with a defilè of carnival companies, floats, grotesque masks and village bands along Republic Street, in Victoria. Carnival manifestations are being held practically in every village until February 5.

On Monday, it was the village of Għarb that hosted a spectacle of colour and dance. Carnival in Nadur kicked off on Sunday. A comedy, Il-Fwieħa ta' Marti, was held under a tent on St Peter and St Paul Square yesterday. A carnival ball, also under the tent, will be held tomorrow with the participation of Morena, Spectrum and various DJs.

The spontaneous carnival will be held between Friday and Tuesday. Foreign bands, The Yardbirds and Krokus will also take part.
