The reign of joy and merrymaking in Gozo commences a week earlier than usual for this year's carnival. Through this initiative by the Gozo Cultural Council within the Ministry for Gozo, the programme is spread over 12 days. The grand opening takes place on Friday with a defile' of carnival companies, floats, grotesque masks and village bands along Republic Street in Victoria.

This year the King Carnival float is by Elvin Borg of Xagħra. With the collaboration of Victoria, Nadur, Xagħra, Xewkija, Għajnsielem, Għarb, Kerċem, Munxar, Qala and San Lawrenz councils' carnival manifestations will practically be held in every village between Friday and February 5. Not to be missed is the late evening spontaneous carnival in Nadur between February 1 and 5.
