Ali Carter fought off severe stomach pains to beat Tom Ford 9-8 in the UK Championship in York on Monday night and book a meeting with Jimmy White.

However, Tony Drago again failed to clear the opening round of a ranking tournament when he was eliminated by Englishman Mark Selby 9-3.

Last week, the Malta professional was ousted from the first round of the British Open by Chinese teenager Ding Junhui, 5-0. Drago, 39, started yesterday's second session 5-3 down.

Selby made sure of a second round berth by winning the four frames he required. He now faces David Gray.

Carter, 25, has been suffering the effects of Chron's disease for the past 18 months and was in some discomfort during his match.

But, after being hauled back from 8-4 to 8-8, he won the deciding frame to book a last 32 match against White at the Barbican Centre.

"I had bad stomach pains and I've eaten nothing all day. Plus I only got an hour's sleep last night," said world no.19 Carter. "I was under pressure at 8-8 but luckily I managed to get through it. I lost 9-8 to Stephen Hendry here last year, so it's nice to win this one.

"I've never played Jimmy before and I'm really looking forward to it."

Australia's Quinten Hann beat Shokat Ali 9-6, winning the last two frames with runs of 86 and 44. He now faces Paul Hunter.

UK Championship (1st round): King bt Hull 9-7; Day bt Henry 9-8; Robertson bt Swail 9-7; Hawkins bt McCulloch 9-4; Pinches bt Bond 9-5; Perry bt Campbell 9-7.
