Alfred Degiorgio, one of the men accused of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, gambled €570,000 in casinos over three years and lost €71,000, a court was told on Tuesday.

Degiorgio, along with his brother George and his partner Anca Adelina Pop stand accused of money laundering after investigations into the car-bomb murder of the journalist revealed their lavish lifestyle despite being unemployed.

In previous sittings, the court had heard how they received social security benefits despite their lifestyle, which included ownership of yachts and luxury cars.

Former police assistant commissioner Neville Aquilina told the court that Alfred Degiorgio was a frequent visitor to the Dragonara casino and over three years gambled €39,000 and lost €18,000.

Abigal Fenech, testifying on behalf of Portomaso and Oracle casinos said Alfred Degiorgio gambled over €40,000 and lost €31,000 in the Oracle Casino and gambled more than €457,000 and lost €16,000 at Portomaso. 

He also gambled €34,000 at Casino Malta and lost €6,000.

George Degiorgio and Anca Adelina Pop had no casino gambling history.

Paul Vassallo, representing Fexserv Financial Service said George and Alfred Degiorgio had made more than 100 overseas transactions. 

The case is being heard before Magistrate Joe Mifsud.
