The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said it might consider West Ham United's appeal against an FA compensation ruling in favour of their former Premier League rivals Sheffield United.

The court said, however, that it would first have to decide if it had jurisdiction to intervene in the matter.

West Ham were told by an FA arbitration panel last month that they would have to compensate Sheffield United for their relegation to the second division in 2007.

The ruling was based on West Ham's fielding of former striker Carlos Tevez whom the panel deemed ineligible to play under league rules regarding third party ownership of players.

CAS said it would examine the jurisdiction question after first giving both clubs the chance to file written submissions on the issue.
