Casual election to replace Francine Farrugia on Siġġiewi council
Farrugia resigned after she was arraigned and accused of fraud at MCAST, where she worked
The Electoral Commission has started the process to fill the seat at Siġġiewi council vacated last week by the resignation of Francine Farrugia.
The Nationalist councillor resigned after she was arrested and accused of fraud and embezzlement of €2.3 million from MCAST, where she took care of the payroll. Siġġiewi mayor Julian Borg subsequently told Times of Malta that he never saw any signs of wrongdoing in her work within the council.
Farrugia is still under arrest.
The Electoral Commission said on Monday that it will receive nominations from candidates for the casual election in Siġġiewi as from Tuesday. Nominations close on Thursday at noon.
Prospective candidates were advised that they must present their Identity Card. In case of illness or being abroad, the nomination form needs to be submitted by a representative of the candidate. The representative must present a power of attorney drawn up exclusively for this purpose and authenticated by a notary public. A deposit of €90 is applicable with every nomination.
Nomination forms for prospective candidates may be obtained from the Office of the Electoral Commission during nomination days.
