I am writing this letter with much disgust and utter sadness. I have been living in Malta for over a year and we have been feeding some stray cats in Bugibba outside our bar as gratitude for keeping any vermin away. Let me say that rats and mice have not got a chance of living here. We feed them a minimum portion so they still go after the vermin.
Within two weeks we have lost four cats. The last one was only about six months old and near enough died in front of us. Why? Someone who only stays in this area for two months of the year and who hates the creatures, so we been told, has gone on a poisoning spree. I can't even begin to imagine the pain these poor animals must go through because the poison does not kill them instantly. They suffer in agony for days.
Is it not time for people like these to realise what kind of suffering they inflict on these creatures, which absolutely do no harm to anyone.
If we were to have a system similar to that in the UK, where they pick up strays, neuter them and return them to the place they have been caught, then the over breeding would stop once and for all. That solution would be a lot more humane.
Please stop killing out cats.
