The BOV Opera Festival will kick off on Wednesday March 5 with Gioacchino Rossini’s Cenerentola Cenerentola which will be presented by Teatro Borgatti di Cento with the participation of the National Orchestra under the baton of Mro Michael Laus.

Rossini (1792-1868) composed Cenerentola based on Charles Perrault’s fairy-tale Cinderella which sees Angelina (Cenerentola) and her stepfather (Don Magnifico) as the main protagonists. The traditional Fairy Godmother, who is familiar to everyone, is replaced by Alidoro, who is a philosopher and former tutor to the Prince. Clorinda and Tisbe are Don Magnifico's spoilt and vain daughters.

Prince Ramiro changes places with his valet, Dandini with the intention that the prince can find his true love, a bride who will love him for himself, and not for his social status. Matching bracelets replace the traditional glass slipper as the means by which the Prince finds Cenerentola in the closing act.

Cenerentola is directed by Giovanni Dispenza and the cast include Giuliana Castellani as Angelina detta Cenerentola, Francesca Bruni as Clorinda, Gianluca Breda as Don Magnifico and Alejandro Escobar as Don Ramiro. Dandini will be performed by Davide Rocca.

The Festival also includes a double bill of Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Nino Rota’s Notte di un Nevrastenico. The BOV Opera Festival has now established itself as the main operatic highlight in Malta’s busy cultural calendar. The BOV Opera Festival is one of the major cultural events supported by Bank of Valletta during the year. As in the past two years, this year’s BOV Opera Festival is also being supported by Valletta Fund Management Ltd. and Middlesea Valletta Life Assurance Co. Ltd.

These masterpieces will run as follows: March 5,7th Cenerentola by Gioachino Rossini, March 10, 12th Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini and Notte di un Nevrastenico by Nino Rota (double bill). The tickets are available from Manoel Theatre’s booking office on telephone number 21246389 or by sending an e-mail to booking@teatrumanoel.com.
