What is it about this island? Why are rules made without following European rules? Are we above the law? It is astounding that so many parastatal authorities abuse their positions either to satisfy their needs by imposing new rules without consultation or are just totally devoid of all responsibility.

Take Malta Transport and local councils for example. How many times has the road user found, without any warning, that his/her way home has suddenly been changed, making it necessary to practically drive around the whole village to follow the sudden new one-way system? It is so frustrating when this happens, especially when the new routes don't improve the traffic flow; on the contrary, they cause more bottlenecks and, in some cases, road rage.

Malta Transport gave these res-ponsibilities to local councils but it should also continuously monitor any new decisions made by the councils. Mayors are not qualified to make rules such as changing routes without getting the advice and approval from the Malta Transport architect. Furthermore, prior notice should be given before any sign or road diversion is due to become active. One culprit of such changes is the Safi council. Safi is the smallest village in Malta and without warning it put up no-entry signs overnight in a major road that passes through the village. This very same road had already been made one-way from the opposite direction. So one can imagine drivers' confusion and irritation, especially because major traffic has been re-routed due to Valletta Road, Żurrieq being dug up.

Malta Transport, wake up and do your job properly.
