Last Saturday a kind-hearted person tried to force his way into my father's house through the front door. Luckily enough he did not succeed.

The door was badly damaged and my father who is 80 years old was petrified.

I would like to thank the police sergeant and his staff on duty on the day at the Paola police station for their prompt action after I made the report at 11 p.m. They came on site immediately and tried to console my father who was still under shock.

I would like to make some observations about what is happening on a daily basis in Paola Road, Tarxien.

I couldn't let my father sleep on his own after what happened, so for this last week I have slept at his house. The road is narrow and very busy. I counted nine buses passing through in half an hour. At least they are rendering a service. What bothered me most was the fact that there seemed to be no driving rules whatsoever and no respect for the residents.

The number of cars being driven at high speed, with music blaring out at unbelievably high volume, is unbelievable. Mostly they are youths in their mid-20s driving expensive cars, wearing no seat belts and with one arm hanging out of the window showing off their tattoo! You don't even dare look at them, let alone talk to them. They think they are above the law.

Another thing I noticed was that many drivers just park their cars wherever they feel like to go and buy bread from a nearby bakery. Some of them even block this main road or the entrance to an adjacent one.

And what about the number of horses/ponies in their sulkies, some of them trotting at a fast pace and others hardly moving, holding up a long line of traffic behind? It must be seen to be believed.

The village feast is nearing and the street is busy as it gets decorated. Last Thursday, a group of helpers decided to make use of a scaffolding mounted on wheels. Instead of using a secondary street (where traffic is not so dense), they manoeuvered it through this main road to get to their destination, creating chaos.

I spent my childhood living in this road which was busy even then, but nowhere near like it is at present.

At least it was peaceful then. I honestly think it's about time the authorities consider re-opening the Tarxien police station. Perhaps some order will prevail. The situation at present is akin to do as you please.
