A 30-year-old Libyan was yesterday remanded in custody after he was charged with importing a bar of cannabis resin on Saturday.

Dr Leon Bencini requested bail but Police Inspector Norbert Ciappara argued the accused had no fixed address and could abscond.

Dr Bencini said the man was going to live in a hotel in Sliema but the prosecuting officer argued the accused had no means to support himself as he had only $300 on him when arrested and these were now exhibited in court. In addition, he could not be trusted as he had already tried to escape when Customs officers had detected the drugs at the airport, the officer said.
