A new composition by Charles Camilleri will be given a world premiere during the ninth edition of the Bir Miftuh International Music Festival, which will start with a piano and flute concert on May 14 at 8 p.m.

Pianist Guido Scano and flutist Stefano Maffizzoni will perform Camilleri's composition as well as works by Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi and Beethoven

The work by Camilleri was written specifically for the festival, which will be held at the Santa Marija mediaeval chapel at Bir Miftuh outside Luqa airport.

The event is being organised by Din l-Art Helwa as part of the celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of its foundation.

The Italian Cultural Institute, the British Council, the French embassy together with the Alliance Francaise and the German embassy in collaboration with the German Maltese Circle have extended a helping hand by bringing over high profile musicians for the festival.

A concert of mediaeval music by the French ensemble Xeremia will be held on May 21 and on May 28 Jonathan Byers will give a cello concert.

The festival will come to an end on June 5 with an oboe, clarinet and bassoon concert by the Trio Rosso consisting of Kathrin Goschenhofer, Dirk Benkwitz and Ulrike Buhlmann

Tickets, which will be issued on a first-come first served-basis, cost Lm7.50 per person and concerts start at 8 p.m.

Funds raised will go towards Din l-Art Helwa's restoration work.

For further information contact Din l-Art Helwa on 2122 0358 or 2122 5952, Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and noon.
