A truck carrying ammonium nitrate exploded on a motorway in eastern Spain yesterday, killing two people and injuring another, officials said.

"Two people have been killed and one slightly injured," a Guardia Civil policeman said.

The two killed had been in a car and a police spokesman said "several vehicles were affected".

Television images showed burned out car parts strewn across the motorway, which had been cordoned off.

Ammonium nitrate is used in fertilisers and explosives.
