Harry Camilleri wins 2002 Candidates

Doyen Harry Camilleri, holder of the record of Malta Chess Championships, won the 2002 Candidates Tournament. With Graf Hans Peter, Vella Duncan and Daniel Able, Camilleri earned the right to participate again in the final of the Malta Championship.

Grand Hotels Summer Tournament

The annual Grand Hotels Summer Chess Tournament had its first round at the Dolmen Hotel last Saturday. Fifty players are participating in this very popular event. The second round will be played at the Seabank Hotel next Saturday. In all the event will run for nine rounds.

SkolaSajf Chess

While the Channel 22 Subway Chess Corner has now run its full programme, there will soon be the beginning of Chess In Skolasajf on July 15 when two schools will hold chess coaching sessions.

In the first session of Skolasajf, which starts on July 22, the schools involved will be San Gwann and Senglea Primary Schools. There will also be chess tables during the Inter School Sports days where other schools will be involved as well.

Training course

The Alekhine Chess Circle in the Russian Centre for Science and Culture is holding chess coaching sessions on Saturday mornings. The course is open only to those promising players who are receiving a special invitation. The curriculum will aim to widen awareness of various Opening Strategies. The course is being held in memory of the late Wilfrid G. Attard, many times Malta chess champion.

Rapid on Sunday

The July Rapid will be played next Sunday at the Naxxar Civic Council with registration starting at 9 a.m. Five games, where each player will be allowed 15 minutes to finish his whole game, will be played on one morning. The session is expected to attract from 25 to 30 players of all categories. Besides prizes for each session, a Grand Prix award awaits the winner on cumulative points.

Local councils Chess

Today, there will be chess tables in the Sports Day of Pembroke Local Council. MCF representatives will be present from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with chess tables and chess equipment to allow games of chess and to answer any questions about chess activity in Malta especially.

A similar event will be held on July 16 at Gudja. Among other attractions there will be a bumper size chess set and board on which public performances will be given. The programme will also contain chess simultaneous against a number of opponents at once.
