The Church lacks a strong strategy to strengthen the family amid worrying statistics of marriage, Fr Joe Borg says in an interview with The Sunday Times today.

Citing the “clear trend in favour of divorce”, Fr Borg said he would like the Church to publish a document, set up a commission and plough money into it in a bid to restore the family.

“We need studies, not opinions. We can’t afford to act in an amateur way any longer,” he says.

The popular lecturer and journalist dismissed comments made by certain Church exponents that Catholic MPs voting in favour of divorce legislation would be committing mortal sin. The Church needs diverse opinions, he insists.

Fr Borg, who had supported the controversial ban of the play Stitching, says he had every right to speak out on the matter since he felt the attacks on the classification board were unfair.

However, he leaps to the defence of Fr Joe Abela, who was forced to resign from the Curia’s film classification board after testifying in favour of the same play.
