The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Michael Savory, will visit Malta between February 15 and 17 accompanied by a business delegation with expertise in financial services.

The delegation will come to Malta from Libya and go on to Tunisia.

The Lord Mayor's programme includes calls on the President of Malta, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Investment, Industry and Information Technology. A meeting with the mayor of Valletta is also planned.

The Lord Mayor, who heads the Corporation of London and is a banker by profession, has a wide-ranging role to ensure that the City of London maintains its position as the world's leading international financial centre.

The British High Commission said the purpose of the visit is to promote closer links between Malta and the UK, particularly in financial services, and to develop further the partnership of choice in this key sector between Malta and Britain, both in the European Union and in the Mediterranean region.

The Malta Financial Services Authority will host a seminar on February 16 at which the Lord Mayor will speak about the City of London and opportunities for cooperation with the Maltese financial services community and investors.

The Lord Mayor will also speak at a seminar that day organised by the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance on Malta's plans to take forward public private partnerships as an efficient, cost-effective means of service delivery. This seminar will be held at the Corinthia Palace Hotel, Attard.

Later on, he will hold talks with the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, Louis Apap-Bologna, and Maltese business representative bodies at the chamber.

Alderman Savory took office as the 677th Lord Mayor of the City of London on November 12, 2004.
