I refer to the report "Jimmy Magro sets eyes on European parliament" (September 6).

The last sentence of the report says that "Alfred Grixti, who is considered as one of the likely contenders for the general secretary post, was the only MLP official to attend Mr Magro's press conference".

I wish to clarify the following points:

I confirm that I am standing for the post of secretary general of the Malta Labour Party. I took this decision earlier this summer after reflection and after various people from all sectors within the party urged me to do so. Mr Magro was among the first persons to know of my intentions.

I did not attend Friday's press conference as an MLP official for the simple reason that I am not an MLP official. At the moment, I am only an elected member of the party's national executive and an approved candidate for the last general election.

I attended last Friday's press conference as a member of maltastar.com's editorial team. This is borne out by the report carried by maltastar.com on Friday about Mr Magro's press conference which could have only been drawn up by somebody who was present for the event.
