Classical guitar duets at lunchtime concert
A rich exploration of the guitar repertoire in an intimate and serene setting
Barocco Foundation, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, presents Strings in Harmony – Classical Guitar Duets, a lunchtime concert on January 20 at 12.30pm, at the church of Our Lady of Victory in Valletta.
The recital features two accomplished Maltese guitarists: Bernard Catania and Alison Galea, offering audiences a rich exploration of the guitar repertoire in an intimate and serene setting.
The programme spans centuries and styles, beginning with Ferdinando Carulli’s Fughetta and Allegretto, highlighting the elegance of early 19th-century guitar-writing. The duo then performs charming arrangements of Mozart’s Der Spiegel and Romance and Rondo from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, blending classical Viennese clarity with the warmth of guitar harmonies. Beethoven’s Sonata in E minor adds dramatic intensity, followed by Bach’s Menuet in G, one of the baroque’s most recognisable melodies.
The recital travels across Latin America with traditional pieces from Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Nicaragua, including João Pernambuco’s lively Sons de Carrilhões, and concludes with Astor Piazzolla’s expressive Dernier Lamento and iconic Libertango, leaving the audience with a spirited finale.
Entrance is by a suggested donation of €13, with tickets available at the venue or via baroccobookings@gmail.com, baroccomalta@gmail.com, or 7968 0952.
