Francis Said says in his letter (September 10) that all Sliema beaches are cleaned on a regular basis.

Does he ever bother to come down by the Surfside and inspect the beach there? If, as he says, a lot of money goes into cleaning the beaches let me assure him that that money is not being spent on cleaning.

The beach I have just mentioned is a disgrace and not worthy to be called a beach. The steps leading to it are littered with empty cans, cigarette packets and other things. Why are not the owners of the Surfside restaurant made to clean the mess made by their customers?

Has Mr Said ever gone down the steps that are the next access to the beach a little way further down the street? I would advise him to take a mask with him as he ventures down the steps. The smell will prove that the beaches are certainly not cleaned regularly. Unless, of course, regularly means once a year when the sea is so rough that it carries all the mess away.

Come on Mr Said do not treat us as if we were simpletons. We have eyes to see, noses to smell and brains to draw informed conclusions.

Maybe some investigations would be in order to determine what sort of money, if any, is being spent by the council to clean the beaches.
