I refer to the letter "Not within reach" (August 30).

Sliema local council and the Malta Tourism Authority spend considerable funds and effort to ensure that all beaches are cleaned on a regular basis and also ensure that the number of bins provided is adequate.

The vast majority of people frequenting the beaches are civic minded; it is unfortunately only the minority that persists in littering indiscriminately.

A joint and serious effort by all members of the public, commercial establishments and the council, is required to ensure that this aim is achieved, not only for the benefit of our residents but also of importance for the tourism industry as a whole.
