Video cameras are to be installed to detect culprits who dump waste illegally, the parliamentary secretary responsible for the environment and planning, George Pullicino, said yesterday.

The cameras would be installed in places regularly used as dumps. Mr Pullicino was speaking about government initiatives to keep Malta tidy during a visit to Ghar Lapsi and Ghar Hasan yesterday as part of the national campaign 'Clean up the World'.

Mr Pullicino said a record 5,000 people were taking part in this year's campaign. Among the participants are 45 local councils, he said.

Infrastructure and Resources Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said that around 580 tonnes of waste had already been removed from the limits of Ghar Hasan.

He said that more than 32,000 tonnes of waste were removed in the last four years around Malta.

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority yesterday embarked on a clean-up operation in the limits of Zejtun.

The operation, which forms part of the Clean Up the World campaign, involved the removal of rubble and other material disposed in four locations alongside the road leading from Zejtun to Delimara.

McDonald's Malta is for the eighth year running participating in the "Clean Up the World" campaign.

McDonald's is helping the Environment Ministry coordinate operations of the Clean Up The World activities throughout Malta and Gozo until tomorrow.

Today, staff from each of the eight McDonald's restaurants will be teaming up with members of their local communities to tidy up specific areas of neglect.
