Watch: Climber rescued in 'complex and delicate' operation
The rescue was carried out on a cliff near the Red Tower in Mellieħa
A woman was airlifted to safety and five others were assisted after they got into difficulties on a cliff near the Red Tower, Mellieħa, on Saturday evening.
The Civil Protection Department said the alarm was raised when the woman, whom it described as a climber, suffered a leg injury.
Two CPD rescuers abseiled down to the site to carry out an initial assessment. An Armed Forces of Malta helicopter was then deployed to airlift the climber to hospital for further treatment.
The operation continued with specialised rope rescue techniques to assist the remaining five climbers, who were helped to go to a safer area.
The CPD said this was a particularly complex and delicate operation due to extremely difficult access to the site in pitch darkness, requiring significant resources and coordination.
