The Astronomical Society of Malta will be holding its Astronomy Week in August when the planet Mars will be at its closest point to earth for the past 60,000 years.

The red planet will be closer to earth than it has been since Neanderthal man roamed the earth.

This means that more detail can be observed on the planet's surface than other times when its size is relatively smaller.

The society will be holding public lectures at Bay Street and MCST-Villa Bighi. Various observing sessions will be organised for the general public including one at Marsalforn.

The week will be held between August 25 - 31.
