A 22-year-old caught shoplifting in Sliema was jailed for one year by a court today.

Susan Andrei, a Romanian national, pleaded guilty to stealing clothes from two separate Sliema stores over an eight-month period. He was caught stealing from a Tigne Point outlet yesterday at around noon.

Mr Andrei, who told the court he had no job or fixed address, was given a 12-month prison sentence by the court, with Magistrate Ian Farrugia noting that Mr Andrei's guilty plea was in part down to the fact that "he had no other alternative...given that he was actually apprehended red-handed."

Inspector Mark Mercieca prosecuted.
