Local clubs yesterday paved the way for foreign players to figure in local competitions after voting to abolish a rule in the ASA regulations which stated that only those with Maltese citizenship are allowed to play.

The ASA and club delegates convened in Lija for an extraordinary general meeting with the only topic on the agenda being the foreign player.

Late last year, local clubs had voted against the participation of overseas players but the decision was challenged by Marsascala and Otters ASC who contended that the ruling goes against EU regulations and the fundamental human rights of waterpolo players.

Yesterday, a proposal to amend Rule 33 was put to vote.

There were 10 votes in favour and eight against.

"Following the delegates' vote, as from this season local clubs will be cleared to sign foreign players and make use of them in domestic competitions," Robbie Ebejer, the ASA president, told The Times last night.

"Maltese clubs will now have to field five home-grown players in their line-up for our competitions.

"That means at least two foreigners for each team for those who can afford to hire their services."

The new rules will come into effect immediately.

Clubs have the green light to engage foreign players and make use of their services as early as the Winter League which is scheduled to start in April.
