CNI calls for independent referendum commission

The Campaign for National Independence has called for an independent commission to oversee the upcoming European Union referendum.

At the CNI`s annual general meeting, members approved a resolution which called for an autonomous body to supervise the referendum.

"This commission would ensure that the correct information, both in favour and against membership, is relayed to the people," the resolution said.

Another resolution appealed to the "democratic forces" of the country to protest against what it said was the anti-democratic imbalance of state broadcasting which was breaching the constitution.

During the AGM, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici was re-elected president of the CNI.
