New Year’s Eve was wettest in 18 years
Wind and partly cloudy weather are expected for the weekend
Malta ended 2025 with the wettest New Year's Eve since 2007, the Meteorological Office said.
The downpour was caused by a persistent "unstable airmass" that saw 12.2mm of rain across Malta and Gozo.
It also brought cold temperatures from Siberia on the last night of the year.
The wettest New Year's Eve on record was in 2007, when 35.5mm of rain fell.
Rain and wind hit Malta in the evening of December 31 as major outdoor concerts in Valletta and the Three Cities were being held.
Video from the Kottonera Foundation showed people sheltering under umbrellas when singer Ira Losco was performing.
Some places experienced thunder and lightning but by the time the countdown began, the weather had cleared up.
According to the Valletta Cultural Agency, some 70,000 people turned out to welcome in the New Year together in the capital city.
Looking ahead, the Met Office forecasts an improvement in weather conditions.
