Labour Party candidate Marie-Louise Coleiro has become the first candidate to be elected.

She won 5,490 first count votes on the sixth district, some 2,000 more than in the 2003 general election.

Ms Coleiro Preca, speaking in a very hoarse voice, expressed her gratitude to her supporters and promised to serve all the people, especially those who are at a social disadvantage .

Ms Coleiro-Preca was the social affairs spokesman of the last shadow Labour Cabinet. She has a long history of political activity and was general secretary of the Labour Party.
