During the course of Sunday's Freedom Day tournament at the Cottonera Sports Complex, Noel Coleiro lifted the biggest weight ever in Maltese competition.

Running through a series of six lifts and not missing any, he notched up 120kgs in the Snatch and, then, cleared 152.0kgs for a new record in the Clean and Jerk. He went on to better that best mark to 155.0kgs a few minutes later.

The performance gave Coleiro the right dose of confidence needed when he defends his Best Lifter title in the Small Nations Tournament in Monaco in May.

There were other creditable performances from Rodiane Mifsud, a young female weightlifter currently in the lead-up for the Commonwealth Championships in Malta next June.

Mifsud lifted a Clean and Jerk of 62.5kgs, way above her own bodyweight, something rarely achieved by male lifters.
