Balzan stages record-breaking confetti show at local feast

Organisers achieved three national records in 20-minute confetti spectacle

Balzan's main square was carpeted with colourful confetti and shrouded in smoke on Sunday during a daytime show celebrating the town's festa which set three national records. 

The 20-minute spectacle followed the morning march and was organised by the Fireworks Commission of Soċjeta Filarmonika Marija Annunzjata.

Families and festa enthusiasts gathered in the square as yellow, blue, green and red confetti was fired into the air. Smoke shots were also set off in sync with music, briefly shrouding the square in a haze.

Sunday's event was held for the fifth consecutive year.

Organisers said the show was expected to break two national records and establish a third. 

On Sunday afternoon, the Malta Records officially reognised three national records. 

The spectacle set a new record for the highest number of flashpots used during a confetti display with a total of 1,020 flashpots.

The show also broke a national record for the largest confetti display synchronised to music with a total of 3,102 confetti launchers, and broke a further record for the largest synchronised confetti spectacle in the Maltese Islands with a total of 4,504 effects. These consisted of 3,102 confetti shots, 1,020 flashpots, 100 whistles, 280 smoke shots and two Chinese boxes.
