Besides Malta, the schools taking part in the Comenius partnership project 'Saving energy... saving our future' are from Germany, Hungary, Poland and Turkey. It focuses on the consumption of resources, mainly the use of energy resources and water in the participating countries, how this consumption can be reduced, as well as how the use of such resources is related to climatic conditions and the quality of our environment.
Many countries are highly dependent on the use of non-renewable fossil fuels, which is contributing to their rapid depletion, higher costs and environmental damage, especially global warming. Reducing the consumption of such resources will have a positive impact both on the environment by reducing emissions and on the economy by increasing the spending power of consumers.
The project aims to increase awareness among students and their families primarily by focusing on their energy and water consumption patterns. The students are monitoring their home consumption patterns to devise and implement simple lifestyle and behaviour changes to reduce this consumption. The students will also work as a multinational group, sharing and exchanging ideas based on their findings with the wider community to encourage people to reduce consumption.
The project is being coordinated by the Junior College's Physics department and will run till 2010.
