The Parliament's approval of the new European Commission means that Commissioner Joe Borg can begin to attend to his new duties as Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs.
Dr Borg is in charge of managing the EU's Common Fisheries Policy and he will have to work closely with the EU regions, which are being affected by changes in fishing practices.
He will be responsible for a newly named Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs. This Directorate-General has been strengthened by being given responsibility for the Law of the Sea, formerly under External Relations.
The future Community Fisheries Control Agency also falls within Commissioner Borg's remit. He will head the Maritime Policy Task Force, composed of Commissioners who are helping maritime communities to face up to current economic, social and environmental challenges.
His main challenge is to launch a wide consultation on a future EU maritime policy. The European Movement (Malta) wishes Commissioner Borg every success in his new task. We are sure he will be successful.
