The use of state school sports facilities after normal hours has been extended to another eight sports associations.

Local councils can invest in schools' sports facilities so they can be used by the community after students leave, Sports Parliamentary Secretary Clyde Puli said.

He was presiding over the signing of contracts through which the Malta Sports Council entered into an agreement with the Vittoriosa council and another seven sports' associations to invest in schools' facilities.

The Vittoriosa council and the MSC are also organising an Afterschool Sports Programme for children from the locality.

Last February, nine sports associations benefitted from similar contracts. Some were making use of the facilities at a highly subsidised rate and others were investing, Mr Puli said.

Under the last agreement, an investment of €450,000 has been made in two schools by three sports associations.
