The European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) has held the first round of the very first competitions for nationals from the 10 acceding states, including Malta, who applied for posts in the EU institutions.
The Malta-EU Information Centre weekly journal l-Aggornat said that there were about 12,300 candidates who applied for these open competitions, published in May.
Calls for applications were issued for the posts of assistant translators, secretaries and assistant administrators to work as permanent officials in EU institutions.
The open competitions include three stages: pre-selection tests, written tests and oral tests with each stage being eliminatory.
Candidates who applied for translation sat for their tests on November 27; the tests for secretaries took place on November 28 whereas those for administrative assistants were held on December 11 and 12.
EPSO had invited 80 Maltese candidates for the pre-selection tests for translators while another 64 were called for the secretaries' tests. However, according to sources, fewer than half in each case sat for the exams.
