As Chris Tanti rightly wrote (March 9), the forthcoming project SmartCity@Malta will be a great benefactor to our ICT sector.
However, at the same time, it needs well-educated (academically) and professional people who can meet the demands of this enterprise. To come to the point, I wish to point out to Mr Tanti and others that although programming languages like Pascal are outdated and old fashioned, they are an invaluable tool to learn the fundamental techniques and ideas behind programming and software engineering. Pascal is a stepping stone to other more modern and commercially used languages such as C++, C, Java, MS SQL and so on. One cannot grasp more modern and sophisticated languages without appreciating the simpler Pascal language.
Thus, when learning other languages other than Pascal, the Pascal-based mindset developed by the student will enable him or her to understand easily other languages in a relatively short time.
