Residents of Triq is-Sumar 'living in fear' after two road collapses in three weeks
An application for development on land behind the fire station in Xemxija should be denied and the site should be preserved as a green recreational zone, a Nationalist MP said on Tuesday.
Graziella Galea was speaking in parliament on the adjournment.
She expressed concern about an increasing number of building permits in Xemxija and said this site in particular should be designated for recreation and preserved.
The site overlooks Mistra Valley. Part of it, in the 1960s, housed BP fuel storage tanks. The recent development application is for the building of a cluster of bungalows with underlying garages.
Road collapses
The Nationalist MP also referred to two recent road collapses at Triq is-Simar in Xemxija and urged the authorities to take action and ensure that residents there were safe.
Her appeal was also echoed by Nationalist MP Ivan Castillo. He noted that the road collapses had taken place within three weeks of each other, and the residents of the area were living in fear.
Part of the street had been closed since the second collapse, Castillo noted. But how long would repairs take?
He called for geological tests and also suggested a capacity study for the whole of Xemxija in view of an 'explosion' of development.
