Consultant emergency physician Jonathan Joslin, clinical lead at the Mater Dei Emergency Department, said the crash site at the Paqpaqli motor show was an impressive one but he was pleased that order was quickly restored.

Dr Joslin was giving medical assistance moments after the crash on Sunday. He said the five victims most seriously injured had been identified by 2.15pm and within minutes they were on their way to Mater Dei.

Medical teams had about five seconds to classify those who were injured into three categories, with those in category one suffering the most serious injuries.

Since the supercar was low, most of the injuries sustained by the victims were in the lower legs, Dr Joslin said, but pointed out that some also suffered head injuries and lung perforations.

The emergency department followed a plan that is in place for such cases. This was recently tried out during the Ebola simulation exercises, and seminars on mass casualty situations were recently conducted by medical experts from Israel.

Dr Joslin said he was proud of all the medical personnel involved and added that the department started operating normally after two hours.
