Local Volkswagen agent Continental Cars is this year marking the 50th anniversary of its association with Volkswagen.
At a celebration to mark the event, Continental Cars chairman Maurice Mizzi said annual sales had risen from a mere 206 eight years ago to over 1,400 Volkswagens last year, making Continental Cars the best selling car dealership in Malta during 2001.
"Fifty years ago, in 1952, my late brother John was in Wolfsburg for an important meeting with Dr Nordhoff, the top man at Volkswagen.
"Dr Nordhoff agreed to supply one of our companies with Beetles for a probation period of one year.
"Dr Nordhoff told John: 'We are now engaged, later on we will get married'. The marriage happened a year later with a signed distributorship contract.
Continental Cars was formed specifically for the importation of Volkswagen cars," Mr Mizzi said.
Thirty years ago, Continental Cars moved into new premises in Testaferrata Street, which is being rebuilt and refurbished.
To commemorate Continental Cars' 50 years of association with Volkswagen, the company has launched on the local market an anniversary Golf together with other special offers and events.
These include two years warranty on the Polo and two years free service on all models.
