Coolest June this decade

Last month was the coolest June for the past 10 years, according to the Meteorological Office of Malta International Airport.

"The first three weeks of last month, with a mean temperature of 22.5°C, were cooler than average, although the beginning of the last week of June saw a temperature rise of three degrees. However, with a mean temperature of 23.7°C, the month was still a whole degree cooler than the average of the past 10 years."

The temperature reached a high of 34.2°C at Malta International Airport on June 29, while the highest June temperature measured since records began by the Meteorological Office in 1922 was 40.1°C on June 13, 1997.

June nights were also slightly cooler than the average of the past 10 years and on the 11th of the month the lowest night-time temperature, of 15°C, was reached. The temperature dropped to a chilly 12.6°C on the night of June 7, 1975, the coolest June night on record.

June is usually quite a dry month with an average rainfall of 0.8 mm. However, last month was twice as dry when just 0.4 mm were measured on June 16 and 17.
