Cospicua Local Council protested today that the first time it learnt about government plans to create a crafts centre in the Dock 1 area was through timesofmalta.com last Tuesday.

The council said that it could not, at this stage, pronounce itself on the idea, but it would have expected prior consultation by the government.

The plans being considered by the government were revealed by Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt in reply to parliamentary questions.

The council said that Dr Gatt's comments showed that despite years of promises, the government was still unclear about how to redevelop the Dock 1 area.

The council said the interests of Cospicua and its people came first for it and this was proved when it had unanimously decided not to object to the outline development application made by Gruppo Romegas for Dock 1 according to the government's development brief, issued in 2005.

The council said it would continue to back any proposals which was advantageous to the area, but it would not accept abuse of such cooperation.
