Non-technical losses of electricity power amounted to an estimated Lm6.8 million in one year when based on the consumption rate and Lm5.55 million when taking into account generation costs, Economic Services Minister Josef Bonnici said in parliament yesterday.

Prof. Bonnici said it was not possible to estimate in money terms the theft of power in a year. This was because Enemalta could only weigh the power stations` output as against the readings on consumers` meters. The losses would consist of technical losses in the system of distribution and non-technical losses.

Technical losses would amount to five per cent although the percentage could vary. The balance represented the non-technical losses that could include theft, faulty meters, underestimation and unread meters.

In the last audited financial year - ended September 2000 - losses amounted to 17.33 per cent, Prof. Bonnici said when answering a question by Labour MP Evarist Bartolo.
