Labour Party leader Alfred Sant congratulated the new Malta Tourism Authority chairman, Chris Grech, when he called on him at the head of a delegation from the Cottonera Joint Committee.

He also briefed Mr Grech on the role of the committee - formed by mayors of Cottonera local councils and representatives of the MLP committees in the area - and about its objective to promote social development in the zone.

Dr Sant said that among the objectives of the joint committee was to provide training to illiterate youths once they left school, to help them find work.

The committee, he added, was also seeking to help small enterprise in the area and towards this end it sought to obtain help from banks.

Dr Sant said the committee agreed that Cottonera had a great potential as a tourist zone and should be developed as such. He also noted a lack of interest from the government in this zone.

Cottonera lacked the most basic things to become a tourist area, such as restaurants and coffee shops among other amenities, he said.
