The Malta Transport Authority and five local councils yesterday signed an agreement authorising the councils to carry out works on arterial roads in their locality.

The five councils are Dingli, Pietà, Zabbar, Zebbug and Cospicua.

Transport Minister Censu Galea said the councils will each be in a position to carry out Lm75,000 worth of roadworks. The agreement will allow them to start works immediately and be reimbursed Lm25,000 per year over a period of three years.

Mr Galea said the government had so far allocated Lm500,000 to allow the authority to enter into similar agreements with a total of 20 local councils.

He urged the mayors to ensure that all necessary preparations are made with regard to services before the roads are resurfaced.

The works, he stressed, would have to comply with the standards laid down by the authority to guarantee that all newly-built roads in Malta were of the highest quality.
