Counting of first preference votes cast in the European Parliament elections started at the old Trade Fair Grounds in Naxxar shortly after 9 p.m.. The counting started after the vote sorting process, which lasted over eight hours.

The first candidate to be declared elected is expected to be Simon Busuttil for the Nationalist Party. His result is, however, not expected before 2.30 a.m.

With a turnout of 78.81 percent, Malta had the highest voter participation rate in the EU among the countries where voting is not obligatory. The average EU turnout was 43.24 percent.
