A St Julian's woman who allegedly stole a gold chain and gave it to her husband landed both of them in court yesterday when police charged her with theft and the husband with handling stolen property.
Victoria Ebejer, 26, was charged with stealing a gold chain worth about Lm300 from Classic Gold in Merchants Street, Valletta, on April 7, 2002, at about 10 a.m.
Stephen Galli, 37, of Sliema, was charged with handling stolen property, that is the stolen gold chain, relapsing and committing a crime during the operative term of a suspended sentence.
They pleaded not guilty.
Police Inspector David Saliba took the witness stand and explained how he had questioned both Ebejer and Galli.
Ebejer first claimed she had stolen the necklace with her husband's knowledge but later said her husband might not have known of the theft at the time of the commission of the crime. She had however presented him with the necklace and had told him she had stolen it.
The case continues.
Police Inspector Saliba is prosecuting.
Dr Chris Cilia is appearing for the defendant.
