The Resources and Infrastructure Ministry has commissioned the Building Industry Consultative Council to organise training programmes in construction for Department of Public Works employees.

A number of courses will be offered, Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said. They include training in the building of rubble walls, the restoration of Maltese stone, plastering and paving, and road construction.

The BICC is also offering the opportunity to acquire a safety card, introduced with the aim of training workers in occupational health and safety.

For the first scheme, the department has assigned 205 workers from various grades, which would allow it to finalise its restructuring soon through the identification of its human resources.

Mr Zammit said the number of participants was a sign of the strong interest on the part of department workers and said the ministry would continue to invest in its workers.

The BICC was also organising programmes in middle-management level together with the University of Malta, as well as courses on the restoration of buildings with an emphasis on baroque architecture.

BICC chairman Robert Musumeci said a number of technical documents intended to complement these courses would soon be published.
