I refer to the article Experts Unable To Analyse Court Exhibits (September 16).

It is not correct to state that "...the situation has now been referred to the Chief Justice". Over the last few weeks the Chief Justice had been informed by some magistrates of the possibility of problems in connection with the appointment of certain court experts and, where appropriate, the Chief Justice had suggested possible courses of action.

However, the provision of adequate laboratory facilities to enable the necessary scientific examination of court exhibits as may be required by the courts is not within the remit of either the judiciary in general or the office of the Chief Justice in particular.
