The Times published a brief item about two Maltese citizens facing court proceedings in Tunisia for being allegedly in possession of 40,000 counterfeit US dollars.
Referring to unidentified "sources" the item states that "relatives were sending money since prisoners have to pay for food in Arab prisons".
The Embassy of Tunisia in Malta wishes to point out that access to free food is among the fundamental rights enjoyed by all prisoners in Tunisia, guaranteed by law and observed in practice. In addition, prisoners are allowed to receive extra food from their relatives if they wish and this is considered rather as a favour and not an obligation for the families.
Soon after their arrest, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tunisia informed the Maltese Embassy in Tunis about this matter and the latter has been following their case closely.
