Court urges better support for former inmates after ‘overwhelmed’ man reoffends
Man charged with robbing his mother will be given assistance to help him reintegrate into society
A court has called for better support structures to help former inmates reintegrate into society after hearing that a man accused of threatening and robbing his mother felt “overwhelmed” after leaving prison.
The court on Thursday ordered that Stephen Mifsud, from Msida, should be given assistance to help him reintegrate into society after serving a 29-month prison sentence.
His defence lawyer asked the court to issue a supervision and treatment order after Mifsud admitted he felt "like the world had swallowed him up" after leaving prison. The specialised assistance would give the accused guidance and support to help him find his way back into society.
The prosecution said the accused’s mother had been admitted to Mater Dei Hospital. She called the police, who went to see her and took her report.
The court heard that since being released from prison last April, Mifsud had been staying with her while out on bail. He allegedly asked her for €200, which she gave him.
Later that night, he allegedly started banging on her door demanding more money. He is also accused of stealing her mobile phone and €600.
The prosecution said Mifsud has three other pending court cases involving similar and other charges.
Mifsud denied the charges brought against him.
The court upheld the defence’s request for the issuing of a treatment order and called for structures to support former inmates like Mifsud so they can reintegrate into society after a period of imprisonment, while receiving the necessary help with coping skills and even financial support until they are able to get back on their feet.
The prosecution was led by Inspector Sherona Buhagiar, while Mifsud was assisted by lawyer Nicholas Mifsud.
